Soccer wanted a financial commitment in the low six figures from the Scorpions to help defray operational costs for the club, as is common with other academies affiliated with professional teams. A member of the Classics Elite board who spoke to the Express-News on the condition of anonymity said the Scorpions told U. Soccer it would provide those funds — for which they were not contractually obligated — before backing out. So needless to say, U. Soccer is irate with the Scorpions.
Scorpions president Howard Cornfield vehemently disputed this, however, saying U. Soccer was actually upset with Classics Elite for withholding part of a contract signed by him, CE president Marco Barros and CE general manager Brian Monaghan stipulating a mandatory number of annual Scorpions season tickets sales by the youth club to maintain what was effectively a licensing agreement between the two parties.
Let Marco open up the books for Classics Elite. The guy who does the most finger pointing is usually the one who has something to hide. The degeneration of the partnership can be traced directly to a heated dispute over those ticket sales, with both sides firmly dug in. Cornfield provided the Express-News with a spreadsheet showing Classics fell well short of its requirements of tickets in the first year of the agreement and in each of the next two.
Barros, however, said CE more than exceeded its responsibilities, accusing the Scorpions of miscounting sales. We did our part, by far.
